Mike Asken, PhD serves as the psychologist with the Pennsylvania State Police. Dr. Asken began his involvement in public safety and firefighting as the volunteer psychologist with Company 14, Camp Hill, Pennsylvania and was an instructor at the Fire Academy at Harrisburg, PA Area Community College. He has published articles on psychology and public safety in Fire Engineering, Chief, and The Pennsylvania Fireman, FireHouse, Speaking of Fire, PoliceOne.com, The Crisis Negotiator, The Tactical Edge, Law Officer, and the Law Enforcement Bulletin. He has consulted with and/or provided training for the FDNY, the National Tactical Officers’ Association, the FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the U.S. Marshals Service, NYPD, Memphis Police Command, Texas Department of Public Safety, Austrian Cobra, German GSG9, U.S. Naval Special Warfare Group I SEALs and the U.S. Army War College. Dr. Asken is the author of MindSighting: Mental Toughness Skills for Police Officers in High Stress Situations (www.mindsighting.com). With co-authors Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman and Loren Christensen he has written MindSet: Mental Toughness Skills for a Nation’s Peacekeepers. He and Dr. Kerry Whitelock authored Code Calm on the Street: Mental Toughness Skills for Pre-Hospital Providers (www.suburypress.com). Dr. Asken is the co-author with BC Eric Nurnberg of FirePsyche: Mental Toughness and the VALOR Mindset for the Fireground.
Dr. Asken’s involvement with sports psychology includes his credential as a Fellow of the Division of Exercise and Sport Psychology of the American Psychological Association. He was co-chairperson of the 1987 National Conference on Sport Psychology of the United States Olympic Committee and has published articles in The Sport Psychologist, The Physician, SportsMedicine and The International Journal of Sport Psychology. He has worked with athletes and teams at the high school and collegiate levels as well with the Hershey Wildcats and Harrisburg Heat Pro Soccer teams. He is co-author with Breton Asken, ATC, MA of Psych Up or Psych-Out: The Sport Parent’s Guide to Helping Young Athletes Master Mental Toughness in Sport. Mike has also provided consultation to various corporations and organizations including Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association, Pennsylvania Association of Association Executives, Pennsylvania Hospital Insurance Corporation, YMCA, US Department of Agriculture, Nationwide Insurance, IBM Corporation, and Roadway Trucking.
