Professional Development Reading List
"Thanks to my reading, I have never been caught flat-footed by any situation. It doesn't give me all the answers, but it lights what is often a dark path ahead."
- General James N. Mattis, USMC
A careful examination of history's most accomplished leaders reveals that their success was strongly correlated to a scholarly appreciation for literature and professional reading. Leadership Under Fire believes strongly that the fire service can enhance tactical discipline, complex problem solving, decisive action, fireground survival and leadership through rigorous professional reading.
Purpose:The Leadership Under Fire Professional Development Reading List is an important tool to enhance the effectiveness of operators and leaders on the fireground. Through dedicated study of recommended readings, an individual will improve their understanding of the technical, physical and mental ingredients necessary to cultivating resiliency, tactical discipline, initiative and leadership in environments governed by chaos, uncertainty, danger and fluidity.
Method:While some readings recommended by Leadership Under Fire will have fire service roots, many will not. The books will largely derive from the areas of psychology, sociology, business, engineering and military history and may appear to have nothing to do with the fireground. In truth, they have everything to do with the fireground.
End state:Leadership Under Fire is committed to developing exemplary fire service leaders and public servants. Contemplating the pertinent experiences and academic research from experts external to the fire service will strengthen the capabilities and character of fire service leaders. Applying relevant lessons and anecdotes from others to your personal and professional endeavors will not only "MAKE YOURSELF HARD TO KILL", but will also enhance your ability to "lead under fire".
