Leadership Under Fire, Inc., Royal Mortenson

Colonel Royal Mortenson, USMC (Ret) is currently the Director of the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI), University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. IFSI is the state fire academy and trains over 65,000 1st responders annually. He was commissioned as a U.S. Marine 2nd Lieutenant April 1983 and served with distinction around the world as an infantry officer and infantry platoon, company, and battalion commander during his 29+ year career. From 2001-2003, Col Mortenson commanded 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines. During his command tour, the battalion deployed and participated in combat operations with Task Force Tarawa in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following his combat tour of duty, he served as the G3 Operations Officer the 2nd Marine Division. In 2005 he assumed command of The Basic School (TBS) in Quantico, VA. After TBS, Col Mortenson was assigned to the Joint Staff in Washington, DC and later served as the Chief of Staff for the Commanding General Marine Corps Combat Development Command. In 2012, he served as the Director of the USMC's Command and Staff College. Col Mortenson's studies include the National War College; the National Defense University, in Washington DC where he earned a Master's Degree in Strategic Studies; Marine Corps Command and Staff College and the School of Advanced Warfighting earning a Master's Degree in Military Studies; and the Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School....back to Our Team
